UK Adventure

So, for my thesis work, I'll be based out of Reading, near London for a month. So of course I've got a ton of trips planned while I'm there. I wrote up a bit of this before going, just to keep everything organized, and then upon getting back, realized everything I'd planned had gone pear shaped. Oh well.

Cornwall Weekend:

I've got a car for a weekend, as I have to drive to a client on a Friday morning, so after spending the morning in Coventry I'll be doing lunch with some friend's parents in Birmingham, then heading to my B&B in Cornwall.

Cornwall B&B 105L for 2 nights, single

Saturday, I plan on going to Mont Saint-Michel and touring around Cornwall. Sunday, I have to drive back to Reading, but I plan on going through the Cotswolds and stop at Stonehenge so I can see it as well.

Ireland Two-Ways Weekend:

At the end of my stay in England I have a weekend in Dublin and Belfast planned. Flight from LHR-Dublin ($176.24), Hostel in Dublin for 1 night (E64), bus to Belfast (2 hrs, E10), Hostel in Belfast for 1 night (20L), Flight from Belfast-LHR ($92.17). I have 24 hours (including sleep) in Dublin and about the same in Belfast, so I'm just planning on wandering around and getting a feel for the cities. I'll probably do the Castle and St. Patrick's in Dublin and in Belfast possibly the Castle and the Folk Museum. I'd have loved to do the Cliffs of Moher and the Giant's Causeway, but I just don't have time. I probably should have chosen just one city to do, but this is what I selected, so we'll see what I can do when I'm there.

Scotland End-of-Tour Trip:

hah Okay, so I finish my work at the end of the month, but I really wanted to get back to Scotland, so I booked a week there. I will be doing more work, just from Edinburgh and Inverness as I'll have my laptop and notes with me. My trip has three sections: Edinburgh for 4 nights (staying with a friend), then 2 nights in Inverness with a 1 day tour through the Isle of Skye, then back to Edinburgh for 2 nights. I missed the Edinburgh Castle last time and Glasgow, so those will be two day trips and maybe I'll run up to Sterling Castle one day, it depends on if my friend is around. If not, I'll be all over the place, if she is, then we'll probably stick closer to the city and just relax.

Lille, France, just across the border

My last ISOW trip was to Lille, France, which is literally across the Belgian boarder. This was another day trip, so we only had a few hours (6hrs) to look around. I went off on my own after we arrived around 10:30am. First stop was La Grand Place.  Standing in the center of the squares stands the Goddess commemorating Lille's resistance to the Austrian siege in 1792. In front of the Old Stock Exchange built from 1652 to 1653, is one of the town's finest building. This building is made up of 24 little houses around an arched courtyard. A second-hand book market can be seen inside. On this square is situated the Grand Garde. Coming out the other side is the Theater and the Chambre de Commerce. Florida: John F. Kennedy Space Center

J. F. Kennedy Space Center on Merrit Island, Florida. It's a place that, for me at least, conjures up memories of childish wonder and awe. A place of space travel, astronauts,  moon walks, and yes, Star Trek. I went back to those memories with a three-day, two-night mini vacation to Cocoa Beach. I would love to say that my childhood came alive again, but to be honest, while there were some interesting things at Kennedy, the overall feeling was one of age and sadness. It felt like a war memorial to the 1980s. The three and a half hour drive from Tampa to Cocoa Beach was uneventful on a Friday morning. We took the toll roads which significantly reduced the traffic and back tracking and only hit rain on the east-side of Orlando. Finding the Days Inn on Cocoa Beach wasn't hard, it's about half-way down the island on the waterfront, right at the Cocoa Beach Pier (5500 N Atlantic Ave, Cocoa Beach, FL 32931). I have a list of countries I want to go to, but I started thinking about the actual things I wanted to do in my life on the plane ride from Lisbon to Miami and came up with these. Some of them I have accomplished, but there are still so many things to do!
